Special Lecture by Shri Vijay Tambe,  Secretary Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan,Wardha

Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University's Oceanic Study Circle of Department of Gandhi and Peace Studies hosted a lecture by Vijay Tambe, Secretary of Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan, on "Gandhism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Relevance and Challenges" on January 16,2026.

Here's a summary of the lecture:

"We don't know what's going to happen. We can't imagine it. And those who predict the future are fools." Starting with this quote from Geoffrey Hinton, a Nobel laureate and AI's Godfather, Vijay Tambe highlighted the uncertainty of the future. He emphasized understanding the current situation to grasp the implications of AI.

Traditionally, economics teaches that GDP growth leads to increased employment. However, despite growing GDP, job creation is declining. This phenomenon is described as "jobless growth". Automation has eliminated factory jobs, and AI is now impacting office jobs.

Chatbots like ChatGPT-4 and 5 assist with tasks, reducing the need for human research, analysis, and intellectual pursuits. This may lead to decreased critical thinking and intellectual engagement.

Tambe argued that technology, driven by profit, tends to homogenize cultures, threatening India's diverse heritage. As technology advances, wealth concentrates, and decision-making power rests with a few experts.

Considering India's future, Tambe questioned whether widespread adoption of technology-based cottage industries would create industrial giants like Ambani, Tata, or Adani. The resulting unemployment could lead to universal basic income, where people receive stipends without working.

Three concerning trends emerge: reduced need for critical thinking, decreased employment, and cultural homogenization. These challenges Gandhi, Marx, and Ambedkar couldn't have anticipated. Today's technology threatens our humanity, emphasizing the need for new, value-based programs and environmentally friendly industries.

To create a meaningful existence, we must redefine prestige, education, and societal structures, prioritizing human values and creativity.
