Global Sustainability Challenges and Responses: An Analysis
Dr. D. Jeevan Kumar, Hon. Professor at KSRDPR University and Managing Trustee of Sarvodaya International Trust, delivered two presentations on "Global Sustainability Challenges and Responses: An Analysis" on January 17-18, 2025. It was organized by Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan in association with Gandhi International France, Academic University College for Non-Violence Lebanon, MGM University Aurangabad, International Centre for Non-violence, Durban University of Technology, and Portland Community College, Oregon as part of IFPNP International Dialogues.About four decades of teaching experience as a retired Professor of Political Science and Director of Centre for Gandhian Studies at Bangalore University, Dr. Kumar discussed the state of our planet, emphasizing the need for appropriate systems such as Circular Economy, Global Governance, and Holistic Education, and strengthening United Nations Global Sustainability Council and national/local government structures. He also highlighted essential tools for sustainability, including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Science-based Targets, Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, Green Technologies, and Innovations, Global Sustainability Reporting, Education, and Awareness-Raising, and International Cooperation and Partnerships. Implementing sustainable systems, structures, and tools demands a collaborative effort from governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals to create a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient world.
In his second session, Dr. Jeevan Kumar elaborated on Global Sustainability Responses, Possibilities, Strategies, and Good Practices, outlining responses such as international cooperation, national policies, civil society engagement, and business initiatives. He explored possibilities including renewable energy transition, circular economy, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly technologies. Dr. Kumar also discussed strategies like integrating sustainability with economic development, stakeholder engagement, monitoring and evaluation, and education, while highlighting good practices that can be replicated and scaled up for a more sustainable future. Dr. Siby K. Joseph , Director of IFPNP chaired the sessions . Prof. Michael Sonnleitner of Portland Community College facilitated the discussions.
