Vijay Tambe  On 7th July 1893, a 24-year-old barrister, Mohan Karamchand Gandhi, was thrown out onto the platform at Pietermaritzburg station in South Africa in the shivering cold of the night, along with his luggage, as a 'coolie'. Everyone knows this. What must young Mohan have thought that whole night in that biting cold? Many possibilities must have been formed in his mind. Whirlwinds of thoughts must have risen. After spending the night thinking a lot, tormenting himself, Mohan came to a decision: 'I will not go back, I will preserve my self-respect.' This was Mohan's personal decision. Later, in South Africa, during his journey of becoming Gandhiji, he thought a lot about how the poor, the destitute, the helpl...

Gandhi Jayanti Lecture of Dr. Siby K. Joseph

The Lawyer Gandhi: The Lessons Humanity Can Learn Dr. Siby K. Joseph I consider it an honour and privilege to deliver a lecture on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti at the Department of Law, Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha. The theme of this lecture is "The Lawyer Gandhi: The Lessons Humanity Can Learn." In this lecture, I will start by analyzing the question of why Gandhi opted for a legal education. You may perhaps be aware that Gandhi initially had an inclination to pursue a medical education and become a physician. However, his devout Vaishnavite Hindu family background stood in the way, because medical training required the dissection of dead bodies, which was in direct conflict with their strict religious principles. Furthermore, Gandhi’s father, Karamchand Gandhi, had served as the Diwan (Chief Minister) of Porbandar, and the family expected Mohandas to continue this administrative legacy. It was Mavji Dave, a trusted family friend and advisor, who strongly advised him to pur...

Address of Shri Vijay Tambe at Gandhi Seva Sangh, Sevagram

Image
Vijay Tambe's  Address on 22.7.2026 Namaskar, I am sincerely grateful to President Shri Bharat Mahoday and Executive Shri Anil Farsode for inviting me on the occasion of the Foundation Day of Gandhi Seva Sangh. While choosing the topic for today's dialogue, I thought it should be in the context of Gandhiji but also something different. From that, it was decided to center the discussion on creativity and the present times. Generally, for any artist, the process of creation is a period of extreme restlessness, mentally exhausting. While the process of arriving at a decision is on, storms of thoughts whirl in the mind. But after the creation of the artwork, the artist becomes free from all that. However, this does not happen in the case of Gandhiji. From decisions in the freedom struggle to even decisions in the ashram, his process of creation is continuous and directly connected to actual human life. After every small and big action, different facets of society and the human mi...
