Will the Gandhi within us awaken?

Vijay Tambe

On 7th July 1893, a 24-year-old barrister, Mohan Karamchand Gandhi, was thrown out onto the platform at Pietermaritzburg station in South Africa in the shivering cold of the night, along with his luggage, as a 'coolie'. Everyone knows this. What must young Mohan have thought that whole night in that biting cold? Many possibilities must have been formed in his mind. Whirlwinds of thoughts must have risen. After spending the night thinking a lot, tormenting himself, Mohan came to a decision: 'I will not go back, I will preserve my self-respect.' This was Mohan's personal decision. Later, in South Africa, during his journey of becoming Gandhiji, he thought a lot about how the poor, the destitute, the helpless should resist injustice. There too he got the same answer: 'No matter how much physical suffering, we will preserve our self-respect.' To arrive at such a different philosophical position after much thought in those times are signs of creativity. Generally for an artist, the period of the creative process is a period of restlessness and mental exhaustion. Once the artwork is created, the artist is liberated from it. But it is not so in Gandhiji's case. From important decisions in the freedom struggle to decisions in the ashram, his creative process is directly related to the human mind and the lives of his countrymen. After every small and big action, different facets of society and the human mind keep coming before him. In accordance with that, his further programs keep changing or rather, they keep evolving. That is why at no period in Gandhiji's life was he ever freed from this restlessness.

A brilliantly creative moment in Gandhiji's life is the decision to withdraw the Non-Cooperation Movement! After the police station was burnt at Chauri Chaura and twenty policemen inside lost their lives, Gandhiji immediately announced the decision to withdraw the movement, taking responsibility for the incident, and admitting that the countrymen were not yet ready for a non-violent movement. Many criticized him saying that he was pushing away independence which was within reach. Gandhi, who had come to India in 1915, had taken this decision in just seven years and remained firm on it. In such a decision, two points are important. The first is morality and the second is awareness of society or understanding the pulse of the people. Again, the catch is that if both points are tried to be used as a strategy, nothing comes to hand. A moral point has to be imbibed in life, only then it becomes my own point. To understand the pulse of society, along with knowledge of tradition and culture, one has to be wholeheartedly one with the joys and sorrows of the people. One has to understand the language of the people. A language that will precisely touch their hearts must come from one's mouth. In short, it cannot be used as a strategy. While saying that the country is not ready for non-violence, Gandhiji asked Appa Patwardhan to study the salt laws in different countries of the world. Appa studied and submitted notes to Gandhiji. On the basis of that information, Gandhiji did not file a case in court or ask someone to raise the issue in the British Parliament or build a movement as a mere economic issue. He designed the Salt Satyagraha as one that creates a feeling of being one nation beyond religion and caste, that says I have a right over the resources of my country, that connects with the daily problems of every person, and that gives an experience of fearlessness through a non-violent fight for our demands. Many were sure that this Satyagraha would not be successful. Messages to that effect were also sent to Gandhi. But the opposite happened. All over India, in the minds of people of all castes and religions, poor and rich, women and men, the consciousness that 'I will be beaten but I will not be afraid' was created and translated into action. For the first time on such a wide scale, unarmed Indians stood up fearlessly against the British rule. At such times, the state institution becomes terrorized and commits brutal violence. In exactly that way, the British government committed violence. But the fear of the rulers was not hidden.

Actually, the question is not about Gandhi. The question is about us. If today we are sensitive, if our compassion and empathy is beyond religion and caste, if we believe in gender equality and if our attitude is to include everyone, then remember, we are Gandhi thrown on the platform. In the darkness, shivering in the cold, straining our brains, we are trying to get out of the situation. Like Gandhiji, the question will arise before us too: 'What is my duty?' But it is important to understand in what circumstances we have to find the answer to this question.

After globalization, the middle class in our country started becoming neo-rich. Now, after the advent of AI everywhere, we will soon see their journey towards the lower middle class. Today the market is flooded with various kinds of goods. Greed and accumulation of goods has increased. The market has changed our ideas of prestige. But the common man has no money in his pocket and no certainty about the future. After 3G, 4G and now 5G, we have a computer in our hands. Along with it, there is also a nice camera to make reels. Most importantly, the dams of information have burst on social media and along with true information, false information is flowing in full flood. There is a shortage of people working in institutions and organizations that bring about good change in society. There is a huge recruitment in modern organizations opened in the name of castes and revered historical figures. Now not only have caste-religious identities become intense, but the fiery identity about historical figures and revered leaders has reached its peak. People are engrossed in playing these identity battles rather than the problems of daily life. Technology has brought the number of jobs to a minimum level. For the programming of the robots to come in the future, today's workers have to work with a camera attached to their head. As the entry of artificial intelligence in every field is almost complete, the number of those being thrown out of the periphery will keep increasing. Discussions have started that universal basic income should be given across the board. Through variously named schemes, by depositing money in people's accounts, we are experiencing today that citizens are being converted into helpless subjects of a king. On the other hand, due to AI, we are going to lose our culture, language, and all-round diversity. Lessening of languages means lessening of thoughts. Limitation of expression. Even though today it seems that we are behaving naturally, even today we are controlled. A program of recording all the details of our living, our likes and dislikes, our nature, our motivations, our vices is going on. We forget that we are also customers of apps that are free on mobile. What we like is what we keep seeing on our mobile screen. But the whole world is different. In short, our life has become like our favorite reels but in reality it is not so. In such a disturbing time, what will be our decision? Do we want to be engrossed in religious-caste identities and live as a robot, or do we want to try to live meaningfully by retaining wisdom till we die? Do we want to find satisfaction in violence and cruelty or be happy as an inclusive, tolerant person? When thrown on the platform in the dark, this is the time to call upon our creativity while shivering with such questions. Suppose we are not even having questions, then you are in the compartment of the train and you are going to be thrown on the platform soon. And yes, if we are sweet to everyone everywhere, it means we are one of those who remained silent when it was time to take a stand.

Every one of us has creative ability. The process of creation spurs transformation. It makes us rethink existing concepts. For this, it is necessary that we repeatedly examine our own concepts.

Will the basis of my creation be goodwill, good thoughts or violence? Does disagreement mean enmity? Then by habit my thoughts are formed in reaction to the thoughts of disagreement. So I cannot speak without someone being an enemy in front of me. It bothers me. I have to constantly find a new enemy. I should be able to express my thoughts precisely without making anyone an enemy.

On what basis are my ideas of prestige? How much share do the market, social media, advertisements, customs have in it? This needs to be scrutinized. In all these influences, do I really need to live the way I am living today? What are my life priorities? I should search for the answers to this openly.

Do I insist that our culture should be pure? Do I think that culture changes with time? How much share do science-technology, floods, droughts, migration, and the folk culture mixed with each other through them have in it? In fact, pure culture means a puddle, stagnant water. A living culture means a confluence of different streams. The process of examining various concepts in this way is definitely painful to the brain and restless. But it also gives joy. We get the inspiration to change our lifestyle.

The incident of the Dharasana salt works during the Salt Satyagraha of 1930 is spine-chilling.

The Satyagrahis are walking towards the police. They know that once they reach there, they will be beaten mercilessly. Yet they walk.

Until the first blow of the police lathi falls on their body, there must be a storm in the minds of the Satyagrahis. After the police start beating them inhumanly, the Satyagrahis just keep shouting slogans of their demands. When they come out of unconsciousness, they are blood-soaked, their body is aching severely, yet they feel very free. The tight knot of fear of the Satyagrahis was gone.

The joy of fearlessness became the inspiration for their creativity. In this way, while living according to one's principles, doors of freedom open. Many paths become easy. One gets the strength to face life. To put it in one sentence - the Gandhi within us awakens.
