Gandhi’s Legacy Goes Digital: Sevagram Ashram Announces QR Code Heritage walks
Ninety-one years after Mahatma Gandhi first made Sevagram his home, the historic Sevagram Ashram has taken a high-tech leap to preserve his message for a new generation.
At a special ceremony held on April 30 2026 in the sweltering 45-degree heat of Wardha, the Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan unveiled a new digital initiative that will transform how visitors experience at the heritage site. The programme, which also celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Sri Jamnalal Bajaj Memorial Library and Research Centre for Gandhian Studies, centered on the introduction of interactive QR codes for all major Ashram heritage buildings and a presentation on the Ashram.
The event began with a screening of Vaishnava Janato performed by artists from around the world, followed by a presentation of the original tune
Modern Access with QR codes and No AI images
Shri Vijay Tambe, Secretary of the Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan, explained that scanning the codes will provide tourists and students with instant access to detailed historical information enriched with rare, curated photographs from the 1930s and 40s.
To demonstrate, the team screened the digital experience for Adi Niwas, the Ashram's first building at the Seminar Hall of Library and Research Centre of Sevagram Ashram. With a simple scan, visitors will be able to see historical contexts that were previously only available in physical archives. In a notable stand against modern trends, the Ashram confirmed it will not use AI-generated images, opting instead for authenticated photographs curated by the Library and Research Centre of the Ashram.
Sevagram: A Laboratory of Non-Violence
The event also featured a presentation titled "Gandhi at Sevagram Ashram: A Laboratory of Non-violence," presented by Dr. Siby K. Joseph, Director of the Centre. The presentation included over 70 slides featuring rare photos. A printed version was also made available for visitors and researchers. It highlighted the Ashram’s development, daily lifestyle, significant decisions made by Gandhi, and the various institutions and personalities that emerged from the site.
The program concluded with an announcement that those interested in receiving the presentation may contact the Director of the Centre.
The event was coordinated by Ms. Shubhangini S. Vairagade and attended by members and friends of the Ashram, heads of Gandhian organizations, activists, and thinkers. The participants joined the Ashram's evening prayer, after which the Director addressed students and members of the media.
