Classes on Gandhian Thought for Medical Students
The orientation camp for the 100 newly admitted students of the 2025 batch of medical students, was conducted in the Nai Talim premises of Gandhi Ashram, Sevagram, from December 25, 2025 to January 7, 2026. The two-week residential camp, is part of a foundation course at MGIMS, Sevagram for medical students and is designed to orient students to a value system based on Gandhian ideology and assist them in adapting to the institute's environment.
Sri Jamnalal Bajaj Memorial Library and Research Centre for Gandhian Studies was entrusted with the responsibility of arranging classes on Gandhian Thought for the orientation programme. Eminent Gandhian thought leaders including medical practitioners were invited to interact with the students. The names included Shri Barun Mitra, Prof. Jeevan Kumar, Dr. Satish Gogulwar, Prof. John Chelladurai, Dr. Avinash Saoji, Dr. Ulhas Jajoo, Dr. Sunil Ganatra, Shri Atul Sharma, Shri Vijay Tambe, Dr. Ravindra R.P., Dr. Prathmesh Vyas, Dr. B. S. Garg and Dr. Siby K. Joseph. The objective behind the introduction to Gandhian ideology and Sarvodaya Vichar is to bring an attitudinal change among students towards rural development, service to the downtrodden, reaching the unreached, and community participation in health activities.
Other activities included skill-building workshops such as 'Values in Health Care: A Spiritual Approach' (VIHASA), and sessions on 'Key to Health', 'Personal & Professional Development', 'Emotional Well-being and Healthy Choices', and 'Humanities in Health'. The daily routine includes all-religion prayers, yoga, and meditation to foster spiritual health. To instil the dignity of labour, students actively engaged in Shramdaan activities, cleaning the premises, helping in the kitchen work, and spinning yarn on the Charkha. Visits to historical places like Bapu Kuti, Pavnar Ashram, and Gitai Mandir were also integrated into the program to instill social consciousness in the aspiring physicians.
