Reception to Jalandharnath Channole


Jalandharnath Channole completes his African Peace Walk 



Shri  Jalandharnath Channole,  who joined Sevagram Ashram  at the tender age of 15  has been staying in the Ashram  for the last 32 years.  He is a Gandhian activist,artist, singer and sculptor.  Coinciding with the commemoration  of the 130th anniversary of  young Gandhi's eviction  from a train at Pietermaritzburg, he went to South Africa to pay homage  to Mahatma.  He visited Gandhi's second community experiment  at Tolstoy Farm near Johannesburg.   It is to be noted that statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela at the site were made by him. He was happy to see the tree at the site planted by them during his last visit four years back.He along with Shri Nitin Sonwane and  Shri veteran Gandhian Shri Gopal Sharan   undertook the Peace Walk from Johannesburg  to Pietermaritzburg from  29th May to 6th of June. He  joined the commemoration of the 130 th anniversary of the Pietermaritzburg  incident on 7th June 2023. Jalandharnath made a statue of  young Gandhi aged 40 for Tolstoy Farm during this tour. On 2nd October, the Young Gandhi Statue will be unveiled at Tolstoy Farm,  Lenasia, Johannesburg. He also sculpted  another bust of Gandhi during his tour for the place  where Gandhi's political guru  Gopal Krishna Gokhale was received at Cape Town. He also visited historical places connected with Gandhi and  Mandela including Phoenix Settlement  in Inanda  near Durban and Mandela Capture site  at  Howick, Natal . He undertook  another Peace  walk  from Mahalapye to Francis town  Botswana in the month of July. He returned to India in the first week of August.

Reception Meeting at Sevagram 



On his arrival at the Ashram, Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan organized a reception at the Seminar hall of Yatri Niwas on August 5,2023 to honour Shri Jalandharnath Channole for successful completion of Peace March in Africa.
The programme began with a devotional song recited by Shri Namdeo Dhole of the Ashram. The residents and staff members  of the Ashram were present on the ocassion. He was honoured by garlanding with  Khadi thread and presenting a Khadi shirt by Smt.Ashaben Bothra President of the Ashram. Shri Pradeep Khelurkar,  Secretary and other members also joined her in honouring him.




 Smt.Ashaben Bothra    President of Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan Wardha presided over the meeting. She appreciated his effort to spread the message of peace and non-violence in Africa.She described his peace Walk in Africa as  spreading culture Gandhi Sanskriti in Africa. She stated that she had the opportunity to visit South Africa along with Dr.Siby K.Joseph and others on the  occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Kasturba and Mahatma Gandhi. But this  was not a tour but a mission to spread the message of Gandhi and Sevagram to Africa. 




Shri Jalandharnath Channole in his reply speech stated that the reception was not for him but for his Jai Jagat yatra.He said he was inspired by the advice given  by Acharya Vinoba Bhave to Shri Satish Kumar and Shri E P  Menon for their world tour on foot. Travel with out keeping any money in their pockets. This was the guiding principle of his walk too. Those who walk with the message of love will not face any difficulty. He said his earlier peace walk in 2018 was much beneficial because of the contacts  he developed during that time in South Africa.People identify the walkers with Gandhi and Mandela. Language of love every body knows and it is the most powerful one.The participants asked some questions related to his peace walk .

Shri Pradeep Khelurkar Secretary of Sevagram Ashram Pratishthan congratulated  him for undertaking the peace  walk in Africa and expressed thanks to all members  for joining the meeting. Shri Siddeshwar Umarkar of the Ashram conducted the proceedings.
